Race, Politics of Immigration and the DuPage County Sheriffs Election
Location : Saint Andrews Church 155 N Prince Crossing Rd West Chicago IL 60185.
Date : October 12th, 2018
Time : 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Immigrant Solidarity DuPage & the Green Party of DuPage present to the community a public discussion concerning the anti-immigrant rhetoric of 2018 mid-term elections in DuPage County.
A DuPage Republican candidate for Sheriff James Mendrick, used divisive race baiting rhetoric in an attempt to scare voters into thinking that hard-working immigrants are a danger to the safety of DuPage County. The silence of Gregory Whalen, Democratic Party candidate for DuPage Sheriff towards this rhetoric will be explored illustrating how silence contributes to the growth of racial inequality.
Our panel moderated by Dr. Melissa Mouritsen, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Political Science at COD, will moderate our discussion with panelists from the following organizations:
Michael Childress, Political Action Chair DuPage NAACP: He will discuss racial bias in the community and whether the recent 2013 Supreme Court changes to the 1965 Voting Rights Act have made it better or worse for voting in Illinois.
Ben Silver, Community Lawyer at the Citizens Advocacy Center of Elmhurst: He will speak and report on the 2017 State Police report dealing with racial profiling and police stops in DuPage County and across the state.
Consuelo Vargas RN – Member of National Nurses United. An Emergency Room Nurse who is leading National Nurses United efforts fighting for Environmental Justice on the Southeast side of Chicago. She will address how race effects Healthcare Delivery.
Cristobal Cavazos, Executive Director of Immigrant Solidarity DuPage: He will discuss the issue of police trust witnessed by members of the immigrant community.
Julieta Alcantar-Garcia – Artist, Poet, Activist – Does hate speech in DuPage County provoke you to action or complacency?
Pastor Josh Ebener – Pastor of Saint Andrews Lutheran Church of West Chicago – Anti-immigrant propaganda and its effect on the immigrant community.
Public discussion is encouraged to complete the presentation immediately following the panel. The two Sheriff’s candidates have been invited by our groups to attend to participate within the public audience to document their positions. Individual invitations to them have been mailed to their address listed on their DuPage County Board of Election Commissions filings.
Next steps for the community are to organize with local groups to educate on how to provide support to all who live through the effect of racist public policy masked as coded language.
Local municipal police organizations must be representative of the standards communities create for their own well being. The County Sheriffs Department candidates are called to repudiate the coded language used in campaign materials during the primary and for their silence this evening to call it out.
