A Plant Based Diet

Save Your Life & The World

7 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012

213 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton, IL

The US is faced with widespread rates of cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, etc.  The world is also facing a looming global warming crisis.  Attend this presentation and learn how both of these major problems can be solved if we begin making healthier food choices.

Dr. Michelle Brannick, a Vermont licensed Naturopathic Physician and Illinois licensed Chiropractor, will speak about “Eating For Health”, followed by a presentation on why if the world switched to primarily a plant based diet we could reduce our carbon footprint enough to stop global warming in its tracks.

Free and open to the public

This event is sponsored by Social Justice in DuPage

Spread the word by widely distributing the flyer for this event.

Please also plan to attend the Just Views, showing of the documentary “Forks over Knives” which has the same theme as this discussion forum.  This documentary will be viewed at 7:20pm Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Unitarian Church (DUUC)  in Naperville IL at 4 S 535 Old Naperville Road.

1:30pm Monday, Jan. 9, 2012: Support DuPage Resident Toni Boughner at her Foreclosure Court Hearing

The foreclosure court hearing will be:

1:30pm Monday, January 9, 2012
Room 1003
DuPage County Courthouse
505 N County Farm Rd
Wheaton, IL

The courthouse building is behind the street buildings and there is a parking garage. You may not take anything sharp or a cell phone with a camera into the building, and security will make you take it back to your car if you forget. After security, you will turn left at the information desk and Room 1003 is on the left and about halfway down the hallway leading to the cafeteria.

Empty homes bring down home values and create the right conditions for crime and vandalism in our neighborhoods. Up to 90% of homeowners do not even appear in court to fight their foreclosure, but on behalf of those who do not – and more especially, as support for those that do – please consider attending this foreclosure hearing to observe how DuPage County Judge Robert Gibson is handling the foreclosure cases in his courtroom. My hope is that we can have several advocacy groups represented now, and in future hearings, to let the court know that all homeowners are being supported by our presence. Please also plan to attend the 7pm Wednesday, February 1, 2012 DuPage Coffeehouse Discussion, “The Foreclosure Crisis – What can we do?”, 213 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton, IL, to hear more about this issue from the Executive Director of the DuPage Homeownership Center, along with my personal story regarding the frustrations involved with my own foreclosure.

Regards, Toni Boughner

ISBE Rejects Lambert’s Petitions

It was a dark day for democracy on Tuesday, December 27th, when the Illinois State Board of Elections refused to accept Laurel Lambert Schmidt’s petitions, even on a preliminary basis, while her case goes to the Illinois Supreme Court. Laurel attempted to file as an established party candidate in the 3rd Congressional District because she received more than 6% of the vote in that district in 2010. According to Illinois election code, candidates who receive more than 5% of the vote in the previous general election are considered established party candidates. However, the ISBE has ruled that Laurel and all Green Party candidates must file as a new party because, they claim, the districts in which they received more than 5% of the vote no longer exist because of redistricting.

This screwy, clearly anti-democratic ruling by the ISBE stands in stark contrast to that of the Cook County Board of Elections which welcomed Greens as an established party for ward committee persons and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District races.

Watch the video of Laurel’s pre-filing press conference outside the ISBE:

Unforgivable

Green Party candidate for President, Jill Stein’s statement on the Durban Debacle.

The Durban, South Africa, talks on climate change have ended. The result? No binding agreement on climate progress until 2020.
This morning, Dr. Jill Stein, Green Party presidential candidate, issued this statement regarding the role of the White House in blocking climate progress at Durban:
WHITE HOUSE ROLE IN BLOCKING CLIMATE PROGRESS “UNFORGIVABLE”
“Unlike my Republican opponents, President Obama professes to believe in science. He knows that America and the world is rapidly rushing to the catastrophic financial and environmental impacts of climate change, and yet he joins the deniers in blocking action to save our children’s future.
Current levels of fossil fuel use are already heading us toward indisputably catastrophic levels of global warming.Yet with emissions rising faster and faster every year, the Obama Administration has shockingly pushed an agreement to do nothing before 2020, ensuring that the critical time window for saving the climate will be missed. That the White House is responsible for this is unforgivable.

Global Warming Apartheid – The Lost Decade Begins

A crime of unthinkable proportions was perpetrated by the Obama Administration and the other developed countries of the world that participated in the latest UN Global Warming conference during the last two weeks in Durban, South Africa.  The conference concluded last Friday.

A deal was struck at the conference that put profit over people, resulting in the escalation of global warming deaths that are currently occurring at the rate of tens of thousands per year worldwide.  Based on this deal, global warming deaths are now estimated to exceed hundreds of thousands of deaths per year by the end of the decade.  Global warming apartheid is disproportionally impacting Africa because of their tropical climate.  Scientists measure that for every 1 degree global temperature increase, Africa’s temperature increases 1.5 degrees.

Predictably, the US media, 80% of which is controlled by 5 corporations, is filling the echo chamber with stories indicating that an agreement was reached, that this is the next step in the previous Kyoto agreement, and that the governments of the world are working together to deal with Global Warming by 2020. This fabrication is also being echoed by the BBC and other worldwide news sources.

The reality is that what has been agreed to, despite the resistance of poorer countries, is a deal that allows global warming-causing polluters (like the US and other developed nations) to continue polluting at current or higher levels until 2018, which is when the first binding global warming reduction requirements take affect per this agreement.

World scientists have reached consensus that the 1990 global warming pollution levels need to be reduced by 40% to insure that the global temperature does not exceed an increase of 2 degrees Celsius by 2020. With this agreement, which delays enforcement another 7 years, global warming pollution is expected to actually exceed current levels by 2020.  This will result in a 4 to 5 degrees Celsius increase worldwide, meaning Africa is likely to see an increase of 6 to 8 degrees.

Fortunately, we still do have news sources outside the tentacles of those 5 CEOs.  The majority of today’s DemocracyNow.org’s one hour news broadcast is devoted to describing the details about this crime that just went down.  (Note:  if you are reading this after Dec. 12, 2011, you will need to go to the show archives and search for the Monday, December 12, 2011 episode.)

Further compounding the harm done to the 99% by this unfair deal, we have the Presidential Debate Corporation, a US presidential debate monopoly created by the Democratic and Republican Parties.  This US presidential debate monopoly will once again be used in 2012 to keep Green Party and independent presidential candidates off the debate stage, resulting in little or no discussion regarding the looming catastrophic global warming crisis.  Unfortunately, this may be our last chance before we hit the tipping point, when all the money in the world won’t be able to reverse mass human extinction.

The 99% have much work to do.  This is yet another reason why I Occupy.

Don’t Miss Our December Monthly Meeting!

The DuPage Greens will hold our monthly meeting next Monday, December 12th, at 7:00 PM at the Two-Thirteen Building in Wheaton. (213 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton, IL) We will be discussing fundraising ideas, ongoing support for the Occupy Movement, and the Move to Amend efforts. We will also be discussing campaigns for the 2012 elections, including Laurel Lambert Schmidt’s run for Illinois 3rd Congressional District.

You can learn more about Laurel by clicking here, but if you show up at the meeting, you can learn a whole lot more about her by asking her face-to-face! Laurel will be making the trek from the south suburbs out to DuPage County to seek our recognition and support. According to her website, Laurel is campaigning on the platform of ending all foreign wars, instituting single-payer health care reform, and increasing funding for public education and green job creation. And of course, as a Green, Ms. Schmidt will not be accepting campaign donations from corporations or PACs.

We will be reviewing Laurel’s completed ILGP 2012 Federal Candidate Questionnaire and voting on whether the DuPage County Green Party will recognize her as a candidate for the 2012 Green Party primary for Congress (IL-3).

So come out and meet the next representative from our neighboring district, and see what else YOU can do to create a better world for future generations. See you there!
